Designing a Vehicle Interior Measurement Toolkit for CarLabs

CarLabs is an automotive-focused company based in Orange, California, working with vehicle data, tools, and insights to help OEMs and automotive businesses make better design and product decisions.
Overview
As a Design Analyst at CarLabs in Orange, California, I worked on designing and developing a toolkit for measuring vehicle interiors. The goal was to make a complex, highly technical measurement process usable for both engineers and non-technical new users, ensuring consistency and accuracy in the vehicle interior database.
Problem
CarLabs had specialised tools and processes to capture interior measurements (using reference dummies like AM95 & AM50), but:
-
The process was hard to learn for new or non-technical users
-
Knowledge lived mostly in people’s heads or scattered documents
-
Inconsistent measurements affected the quality and reliability of the database
There was a clear need for a structured, user-friendly toolkit that could standardise how interiors were measured across vehicles and users.
My Role
-
Understanding the existing measurement process end-to-end
-
Designing a physical + digital toolkit to guide users
-
Creating clear visual and written instructions
-
Testing the toolkit with both technical and non-technical users

From Process Mapping to Visual Design
The following manual pages represent the final outcome of translating engineering workflows into clear, accessible visual instructions. Each page was developed through field observation, iterative prototyping, and testing with real users to ensure clarity and usability.
